About us

Welcome to our bowen etc website.  This is where you are going to find the definitive guide to  The Bowen Technique  and other complementary therapies in and around Pontefract and Wakefield.

Let us take this opportunity to introduce ourselves.

Caroline Lowe is a qualified  Bowen Therapist having studied with the European College of Bowen Studies.  She focuses her practice on the beneficial effects experienced after a session of Bowen by ME and fibromyalgia sufferers.
She also incorporates Reiki into her practice (not, it is important to say at the same time as Bowen).  Having come to Reiki in 1996 she has practised over the intervening years attending sessions with a number of inspirational Reiki Masters in the Yorkshire and wider area.

Caroline's background shows varying focus.  After graduating she trained as a psychiatric nurse in London, moving away from that field in the late 1980s to focus her energy in the public sector. T'ai Chi and Alexander Technique were two of her interests in her search for physical and emotional balance at that time.  More recently having trained as a teacher Caroline extended her interest in healing by undertaking study with the European College of Bowen Studies, qualifying in 2007.

She hopes through these contacts at bowenetc, focusing on the Wakefield and Five Towns area, that people may access therapies that sustain both mind and body finding both peace and pain relief and a fresh focus for their lives and careers.

Julie G Greensmith is a qualified and registered practitioner belonging to the following professional organizations:

The British Society of Clinical Hypnosis

The Association of Therapy Lecturers

The International Council of Holistic Therapists.

Julie has worked in the field of complimentary medicine since 1988, having originally trained and qualified in body energy systems including Massage, Aromatherapy, Kinesiology, Reflexology and Reiki, Indian Head Massage and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Today her focus is mainly on Clinical Hypnotherapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Life Coaching, Lecturing and Reflexology.

Towards the end of the 1990s Julie began to research the psychological models of therapy and went on to qualify and register as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Master Practitioner of NLP, and Personal and Executive Life Coach.

Julie runs a busy private practice in the centre of Wakefield where she offers individual consultations for Clinical Hypnotherapy, NLP, Life Coaching, Reflexology and Stress Management. In addition she continues to deliver workshops and training days on Stress Management, Personal Development and Confidence and Self-Esteem Programmes.

Julie believes that flexibility in techniques is the key to effective change, whether this be in physical health or psychological well-being. There is no ‘one therapy suites all’ model, we are all unique individuals and as such we all have differing needs, the body tells a story via the language of the feet and so for some reflexology can be highly effective; for others Hypnotherapy or NLP may be the way to release the emotional baggage and pain and enhance health, vitality and creativity; and yet others may benefit from the more direct approach of Life Coaching.

BOWEN TECHNIQUE

Bowen Technique is a gentle physical therapy suitable for young and old alike.  It involves the practitioner making gentle, rolling challenges to the clients muscles ligaments and tendons.

It can best be described by Julian Baker of ECBS

"The Bowen technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy, named after its innovator Tom Bowen. The technique involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs to move over muscle, ligament tendon and fascia in various parts of the body.

The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure. During a session the client will lie on a therapy table or bed.......Most of the work can be performed through light clothing, although some therapists prefer to work on skin. The ultimate choice should be that of the client's however. Although each session will vary ...... an initial treatment will address the whole body. As a general rule, moves will be made over the lower and mid back and legs, the upper back and shoulders before finishing with neck moves with the client supine (face up).

A feature of the work is that between sets of moves the therapist will leave the room and allow the client to rest. This is a key element of Bowen and is a defining aspect of the technique as well as being one of the most important. The break allows the body the opportunity to create a decision about what action needs to be taken in response to the moves given.

With a Bowen move the response mechanism is thrown into a degree of confusion as to what the appropriate response should be. The moves aren't painful and so therefore defence isn't called for. There is no friction or rubbing so no need to increase fluid to the area. The breaks give the nervous system a chance to establish the correct actions. In the process other information can be gathered by the body and it is common for areas not being directly treated to respond to the treatment.  (ECBS  www.thebowentechnique.com)

The Bowen Technique is a gentle, deeply relaxing, non-invasive therapy that appears to help the body and ultimately the mind to relax and find a naturally balanced state. For many that balance brings healing.  Effective as a structural treatment for specific pain, Bowen therapy addresses the body as a whole.

Bowen Technique can be effective in aiding with general relaxation and more specifically:

  • Back and neck problems

  • Digestive and bowel problems (such as IBS)

  • Repetitive strain injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Joint problems

  • Anxiety and stress-related conditions

  • Headaches and migraines

    Reflexology

Reflexology is a system which applies massage and firm pressure to reflex points on the feet, hands or ears. In the west reflexology is usually applied only to the feet to enhance well-being and health.

Reflexology has been shown to be helpful in the following areas:

    Ø      Stress related conditions

    Ø      Musculo-skeletal pain

    Ø      High Blood Pressure

    Ø      Headaches and Migraine

    Ø      Sinus problem and catarrh

Ø      Bowel disorders such as IBS

    Ø      Menstrual irregularities

    Ø      Psychogenic infertility

    Ø      Insomnia

Ø      Asthma and other respiratory problems

    Ø      Arthritis

    Ø      Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Reflexology acts as a therapy in its own right and can be used alongside traditional medical treatments.

    Reflexology is particularly valuable for:

Ø      People suffering from long term chronic stress and tension

    Ø      Chronic illnesses

Ø      People who ‘don’t like taking pills to relax’

Ø      Those who wish to increase their sense of well-being and energy

Julie G Greensmith has been a qualified, practicing Reflexologist since 1994 and works in the centre of Wakefield with some provision for home visits.

    HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy is completely natural and safe, there are no harmful side effects. When administered by a professionally trained and skilled Hypnotherapist the benefits are long lasting.

Hypnotherapy means using hypnosis as an aid to relieve a variety of physical and psychological symptoms.

Hypnosis is a two-way process between the therapist and the client. The therapist talks in a way that allows the client to enter a different level of consciousness which facilitates relaxation. The client is not asleep, nor in the process of going to sleep, but may feel as if they are in a pleasant daydream, where the mind is temporarily drifting from one thing to another, whilst maintaining a wakeful state.

Clinical Hypnotherapy is a useful way to resolve many psychological problems, in addition to relieving medical conditions.

It is estimated that approximately 85% of people from all age groups and backgrounds will readily respond to Clinical Hypnotherapy. It is often successful when other, more conventional methods of treatment have failed.

It should be noted that Hypnosis does not claim to cure. Medical conditions should always be discussed with your doctor. If you are seeking hypnosis for a medical condition, then your doctor’s approval would need to be sought.

    Hypnosis can be used for:

Ø      Breaking unwanted habits such as smoking, nail biting, stuttering, nocturnal enuresis

    Ø      Weight loss and control

Ø      Obtaining relief and often remission from symptoms of migraine, gastro-intestinal conditions and neurological disorders

Ø      Dermatological conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, neuro-dermatitis, warts

Ø      Gynaecological problems such as PMS, amenorrhea, dysmenmorrhoea, psychogenic infertility and pain control in childbirth

Ø      Pain control for arthritis and general neuromuscular pain

Ø      Hypnosis can free the individual from phobias, compulsions, emotional problems, insomnia, inhibitions, negative feelings, jealousy, anxiety and stress and trauma.

    Ø      Relationship and sexual problems

    Ø      Exam worries

Ø      Increasing work/study/sporting performance, improving concentration and memory

    Ø      Boosting confidence and self-esteem

Julie G Greensmith holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and is a full member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Julie works in the centre of Wakefield with some provision for home visits
